Learn to sail at TVSC with our RYA Level One and Level Two training courses, with friendly instructors and a range of training boats.
Level 1
The Level 1 course is aimed towards those with no prior knowledge of sailing. The course will introduce you to sailing with all you need to get afloat under supervision. You will learn how to sail in all directions, and an awareness of launching and recovery. Once you have achieved level 1 you will be competent to sail in light winds under supervision.
The next step after achieving level 1 is to start working towards level 2, which starts working towards rigging, launching, sailing in all directions, capsize recovery and essential safety knowledge.
Level 2
The level 2 course is the next step in your sailing journey. This sets out the foundations of sailing, sailing ability along with theoretical knowledge is assumed to be up to level 1 standard.
The course consists of rigging a dinghy with a minimal amount of help, understanding how to launch a boat in different wind directions, and learning standard sailing manoeuvres.
The course also covers essential sailing safety knowledge. Once you have achieved level 2 you will be able to sail and make decisions on and off the water in good conditions.
What you will need:
You don’t need any specialist gear to learn to sail but if you have your own gear such as a buoyancy aid or wetsuit, we recommend you wear this as you know it fits and is comfortable. Otherwise comfortable clothing and suitable footwear is recommended. This could be wetsuit boots, wet shoes or old trainers. We do not recommend crocs, or jeans and flip flops are not a good idea. If you don’t have any kit, we have buoyancy aids for your use while you are on the course.
We strongly recommend sunscreen, even on cloudy days and on hot and sunny days a hat and sunglasses are a good idea. You may also wish to bring a water bottle with you and we have the facilities for you to top up as needed.
You don’t need to bring lunch, that is all included in your sailing course.
