The Royal Meteorological Society has an excellent article about the importance of sailing weather here.
As sailors we are rather dependant on the weather, or more specifically the wind. We advise sailors to pay attention to the weather forecast and to help you we have put together some useful tools, including our very own TVSC weather app.
RIVER LEVEL
As Trent Valley Sailing Club is situated on the River Trent, the river levels are just as important as the wind. There is a gauge situated just up river from the sailing club at Shardlow.
The River levels:
0.83m is roughly the same level as the top of the front landing stage
2.60m is roughly the crown of the front lawn
The nearest point for flood warnings is the gauge at Shardlow. You can check the height over the past five days and the forecast levels for the next thirty six hours here.
You can also check the nearby measurements of rivers in the area.
EAST MIDLAND AIRPORT
As you would expect from an airport, East Midlands have a number of weather stations with automated sensors suites which are designed to provide readings to aviation and meteorological operations, weather forecasting and climatology. They are particularly useful for the wind forecast.
CANAL AND RIVER TRUST
While the Canal and River Trust don’t predict the weather, they do provide notices about closures or works that may affect the river and canals. Have a look at the Notices and Stoppages.
